WELCOME TO THE 2021 DISMANTLING INEQUITIES CONFERENCE!

Join us on December 9th and 10th for MAVA’s Virtual Dismantling Inequities Conference! This live and interactive conference highlights the connection between racism and other volunteerism barriers, such as ableism, ageism, homophobia, anti-semitism and more. You will connect and engage through intentional and thought-provoking dialogue on the intersections of race with other "isms" including sessions of the "unconference" style format --designed to invite conversation around the question: "How do we dismantle inequities in volunteerism"? --and networking opportunities.

Experience 3 keynote speakers and 15 concurrent sessions designed for YOU (staff, AmeriCorps members and volunteers) in all areas of volunteerism to choose from. This conference is unlike any other as it propels you to create action plans to dismantle inequities within your scope of work, the field of volunteerism and your communities.

Keynote Sessions

Indigenous Values - Reclaiming the Narrative - Jackie Crow Shoe (Kkiitoos aakii)

Holding sacred our Indigenous tools given to us by our ancestors is essential to our well-being. Our ceremonies remind us of our traditional values and beliefs. All of this is necessary and becomes our anchor, especially when we find ourselves struggling to do this work of dismantling inequities or decolonizing our systems. In this session, you will gain a deeper understanding of an Indigenous lens, the importance of looking in the mirror when entering this work and the difference between Lovely Knowledge vs. Difficult Knowledge.

Now More Than Ever: Why Leadership on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Requires Emotional Intelligence - Anne Phibbs

For many who care about advancing equity and social justice in all areas of their lives, this past year has brought tremendous challenges. While U.S. society grows increasingly diverse and complex, our social and political discourse grows more polarized, less nuanced, and frighteningly hostile. Whether it’s another leader being accused of sexual harassment/assault, a new challenge to rights we thought secure, or the reemergence of organized white supremacy, we are living through a profound social and cultural moment. Continuing to build an inclusive and equitable society, in the face of so many challenges, will require not just allies and advocates, but leaders and risk-takers. And these leaders must come to the work prepared, not just intellectually but emotionally as well. In this practically-focused presentation, we will explore how the framework of “emotional intelligence” has much to offer those of us doing the work of diversity, inclusion, and social justice.

Moving Belonging Beyond the 9-5 - Breauna Dorelus

We're in a place where most of us have heard the definitions. We've been in conversations around anti-racism and what accountability means, and some of us can even directly translate it to policies and management. But what happens when you stop the volunteer session? When you go home? Do you see DEI as a hat you can take off once your role is done for the day? In this session we will talk about the importance of practicing justice in your day to day so that you become a better professional and practitioner of service for the communities you partner with. We'll dive into how your personal journey directly influences your interactions with your volunteer base and how to infuse belonging and neighboring as a way of life and not just an added obligation on your to-do list.
