MAVA Year in Review

Karmit Bulman | Published on 1/7/2021

The field of volunteerism changed dramatically in 2020 and MAVA responded quickly. We created two COVID-19 volunteer engagement response guides, hosted weekly COVID-check-in meetings and held trainings on adapting to changes in volunteerism that resulted from the pandemic. We helped organizations to engage volunteers in virtual volunteerism in addition to finding safe ways for volunteers to do their work in person. We conducted extensive research and provided written materials and training on how to tap into the strengths of older volunteers (especially during a pandemic).  We examined the rise in informal volunteerism and produced written materials about the importance of learning from the 70% of our World’s volunteers who contribute outside a formal organizational structure. We provided support and connection for professionals who engage volunteers through conferences, connection events, webinars and written materials.  2020 has changed the volunteerism landscape. MAVA will continue to advocate and educate so that the change ultimately results in stronger communities.
