Meet MAVA VISTA Member: Brittany Bowden

VISTA Member: Brittany Bowden
Site: Reading & Math, Inc.
Project Focus: Volunteer Capacity Building

Why did you make the choice to serve a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA member?
I served two years as a Reading Corps member. I love my service site and was torn between continuing as a RC member and taking the next professional step. I wanted to still be a part of something doing so much good but also build up my resume by challenging myself professionally. VISTA service at Reading Corps headquarters with access to so many opportunities for professional development seemed like a great fit.

What are you working on this year?
Building up RMI’s community volunteer services to be able to offer additional support to service sites. I am also working on increasing access to resources and training for serving members to enrich their service and hopefully strengthen their schools.

What do you hope to do in the future and how is VISTA supporting that?
I hope to go back to grad school to complete a degree in Library & Information Science. I hope that the work I’m doing within RMI and VISTA, building volunteer capacity within a non-profit and recruiting and retaining volunteers, will be helpful when learning about the operational side of library work. The professional development opportunities and trainings offered through VISTA and MAVA are invaluable and I am grateful for all the resources at my disposal to make this year a success.
